Consecrated
in 1962 to replace the medieval one destroyed in the 2nd World War, the
new cathedral was designed by Basil Spence. The cathedral is filled with exceptional works of art from the leading artists of the day. Graham Sutherland's tapestry of Christ in Glory dominates the East End of the cathedral. John Hutton's glass screen of Saints and Angels forms a transparent West End, with the ruins of the old cathedral (illuminated at night) visible beyond. Coloured light streams through John Piper's Baptistery window and Epstein's St Michael and the Devil guards the cathedral steps.
In a survey of the British public's attitude to modern buildings, Coventry Cathedral was voted the nation's favourite 20th century building. This magnificent building provides a unique spiritual atmosphere for Saint Michael's Singers' performances of choral music.

CARS
The recommended access is via the Coventry Inner Ring Road, leaving at Junction 2 and following the brown Cathedral signs. This will lead via Hales Street, turning left at Millennium Place (opposite the Coventry Transport Museum). Following "Cathedral Parking" signs, continue past the bus station entrance, then turn left into Cox Street, and first left again into Fairfax Street car park. The current evening charge after 18:00 hours is 50p.
COACHES (Satnav code CV1 5FB)
Again the recommended signed route is via Ring Road Junction 2, following the brown Cathedral signs along Hales Street, turning left and passing the bus station entrance, before turning right into Cox Street (signed Cathedral Coaches). Turn right again at the next crossroads into Jordan Well, then first right again into Bayley Lane (this is the only route that long vehicles can use). The cathedral is immediately ahead. Bear right after approximately 100 metres and passengers can be dropped off at the foot of the main steps, where a ramp is also available for those with special needs. There are bollards in the road, with an intercom to the University security staff who will lower the bollards to allow coach access to Priory Street alongside the cathedral.
Directions to coach park after dropping off passengers
Turn left at the (north) end of Priory Street, then right at Millenium Place. Continue to the Ring Road Junction 2 and keep to the right hand land as the entrance to the coach park is approximately 90% of the way round the junction roundabout. (Beware: avoid the spur that takes you back up to the ring road, access to the park is then on the right.) There is a charge for coaches of £2.50 per visit.
