Brahms' German Requiem |
|
| Date: | Saturday 10th November 2012 |
| Time: | 7:30 pm |
| Location: | Coventry Cathedral |
| Performers: | Ilona Domnich, soprano Robert Davies, baritone Parliament Choir Saint Michael's Singers Southbank Sinfonia Conductors: Simon Over & Paul Leddington Wright |
As part of the Cathedral's annual Remembrance focus, the iconic
'Requiem' by Brahms has at its heart the transition from
anxiety to comfort for those who mourn. Written partially to
assuage Brahms' grief over the death of his mother and of his
close friend Robert Schumann, the setting of texts from the
German Lutheran Bible is a continually refreshing move away
from the traditional Latin Requiem Mass. 'A German Requiem',
however, is not simply a memorial to the composer's mother
or mentor, but a message of hope for us all as we remember
all those lost through the tragedy of war and other conflicts. |
