Michael Bochmann’s Orchestra Pro Anima will play Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no.3, a favourite amongst music-lovers, and also the beautiful Boyce Symphony no 1 in Bb. The Saint Michael’s Singers will sing Bach’s setting of Psalm 117, Lobet den Herrn. Schϋtz’s Jauchzet dem Herren is a setting for 3 choirs of Psalm 100, Jubilate Deo, and allows the chorus the opportunity to sing in surround-sound. All in all, an evening not to be missed!
Handel’s Dixit Dominus, written when he was only 22 in 1707, is one of the most exciting and energetic works in the whole of his output. It’s rare to find a piece that challenges the chorus and players as does this early work, but at the same time is so appealing to performers and audience alike.
Written whilst Handel was in Rome, the text of the psalm talks of God as ruler over his people, and as such, the work is a sizzling example of baroque choral and orchestral music at its most vibrant and cheerful.
